Welcome from Co-op Academy New Islington

Dear Parents/Carers,

It has been another lovely week at New Islington! One highlight has been a today's wonderful Number Day, and it has been fascinating to observe our pupils demonstrate their deeper understanding of maths. I was blown away by some of the outside the box thinking going on in classrooms!

This week we have also noticed a rise in the number of children coming into school unattended.

We would like to advise that only children in year 5 and year 6, with written permission from their parent/carer, are authorised to walk to and from school unsupervised. All other children must be accompanied to the classroom or brought to the main office if late, where the parent/carer must sign the child in.

Parking permits have been introduced around Ancoats recently, which further restricts parking near school. We recommend parking at Aldi and walking up to school from there. Parents are not permitted to use the staff car park unless authorised by the academy.

As always, thank you for your continued support,

Mr Berry

What a Busy Week!

Year 6 worked on a project for Go IT before Christmas to use AI to create an app to solve an environmental issue in our local area. 2 children from 6EB went to Angel Square to compete with other Co-op schools with their idea for an app which uses AI to identify if berries are safe to eat when out on a hike. The children delivered a fantastic presentation to a packed auditorium with their ideas. Well done boys!

It was our STEM Club's long awaited "Egg Drop Challenge" this week! Our STEM Club members had split off into 5 teams to see who could drop an egg off the balcony without it breaking. We had parachutes, padded containers and more designs incorporated into our builds!

An outstanding 3 out of 5 teams managed to succeed the challenge, with 2 teams joining for 1st place using the least amount of materials!

A very well done and an overall egg-cellent time!

Next week is the last session, but due to the popularity of it, we hope to run it again in the future.

With the help of our PLANT Co-op Manchester volunteers, year 1 children have been learning about the loss of biodiversity in our cities and planted sweat peas for early food for pollinators in our school garden.

Year 6 children rebuilt the very popular den which was literally on its last leg.

A lot of planning, thought and effort has gone into making it sturdy and semi-permanent, withstanding all weathers and wild play.

In Science this week, Year 5 investigated different methods of separating mixtures based on their properties. The children's mixture consisted of salt, paperclips, cubes and herbs. First, they used a magnet to remove the paper clips. Then, they sieved the mixture to remove the cubes. After that, they added water to dissolve the salt. Because herbs are insoluble, they used filtration to remove them from the mixture. Finally, they put the salt solution in the sun to evaporate it.
