Year 2 children learnt this week about the importance of using the right type of compost when planting.
We talked about the difference between mud, soil and compost and how important it is for plants to get the right amount of nutrients to grow well for best results.
With the help of garden experts and volunteers Rachel and Gary from PLANT Manchester (NOMA), the children made their own compost starters during the workshop, using recycled cardboard for the carbon part and ripped up wild plants and grass clippings for the nitrogen part at a ratio of 2:1.
Everyone had so much fun when we filled up two large tubs full of carbon and nitrogen, which will be added to the hot compost containers at PLANT, ready to be used for planting in another workshop in about 3-6 months.
