  • The Magic of Thinking Big – with Holly Budge

    Published 29/03/23

Some of our Year 5 pupils went to the Manchester Grammar School to participate in their annual Bexwyke Lecture.

This year the theme was ‘The Magic of Thinking Big’ and the guest speaker was Holly Budge. Holly is an Everest Summiteer and the first woman to skydive Everest!

From jumping out of a plane over Everest, to ambushing poachers in Africa, to completing a 1000km race on semi-wild horses through Mongolia. Holly is no stranger to taking action, asserting her voice and facing her fears.

She demonstrates the importance of setting big goals and maintaining a positive mindset. Through real-life examples, Holly showed why we should never underestimate the sheer power of the human spirit.

Our pupils did us proud, and we all send our thanks to @mgs_1515 for an amazing, memorable day!

This is a chance for children to create some headwear as simple or as complicated as you wish, and bring them to school on Friday 31st March. Do a Google Search (images) for Easter / Spring Bonnets and let your imagination go wild. Parents of pupils in this age group are welcome to join us for the Bonnet parade at 9:10 on Friday 31st March. If the weather is dry, we will parade around the playground; if it is wet we will be in the hall. See you there!

Decorated Egg Competition Friday 31st March: We are inviting our Key Stage Two children to bring to school a decorated egg on Friday 31st March. Once again, these can be decorated in a simple or a complicated way – plain colour or a scene can be created with several eggs. Do a Google Search (images) for Decorated Eggs. Please ensure the egg is hard boiled before you start to decorate it. We look forward to seeing your creations!

  • Mystery Readers come to New Islington

    Published 23/03/23

Our pupils have been excited and enthused through our ‘Mystery Reader’ initiative.

Parents have signed up to come in and share their favourite book with the children. It’s kept a secret from the children until the moment that the parent walks in the class – you should see the children’s faces!

    Kai’s mum, Gloria says:

“It was 20mins of pure joy! The kids were excited, engaged, and a captive audience! They really enjoyed the experience of having a parent come to read to them! (I know I wasn’t Quentin Blake -the illustrator- that they were expecting but they treated me like a star. I loved the session! As a parent it was wonderful to experience that joy and connection to reading with the Year 2’s. I recommend it to every parent”

  • We’re making our city a greener space!

    Published 23/03/23

Over the last two weeks, 15 Year 3 and Year 4 pupils have planted over 200 snowdrops and various wild flowers in Manchester’s green spaces around Sadler’s Yard and Miller Street.

The children enjoyed getting their hands in the soil to make our city a greener place. Snowdrops are very pretty perennial woodland flowers that blossom before any other bulbs in late January to usher in spring and chase away the winter blues.

Many thanks to the kind staff of Plant NOMA for inviting us and providing our children with such a fantastic activity.

Watch out for the beautiful flower displays as you walk through Sadler’s Yard and along Miller Street in the seasons to come!

A huge thank you for your generous donations towards the Turkish Syrian Earthquake Disaster Fund. We have transferred over £550:80 to the Red Cross Disaster appeal. The Year 3 cake sale was a massive success – thank you to everyone involved.

    Your Voice Survey (Parents):

Every year, Co-op Academies Trust carries out an annual survey in all our academies for all parents, after which we review the results and put together action plans to make improvements where needed and do more of the things you tell us are going well. It is a hugely valuable experience and only works if everyone has their say.

This survey is entirely anonymous. Individuals cannot be identified and no attempt will be made to do so – the aim of the questions are to get an overall opinion and to see where we can do better. You do not have to answer all the questions, you are able to leave some blank if you prefer but we ask you to be honest and complete these in order for us to fully understand the wider picture.

You only need to complete the survey once and it closes on Monday 13th March 2023

Your Voice Survey (Pupils in Year 5&6):

Every year, Co-op Academies Trust carries out an annual survey in all academies. All pupils across the Trust can complete this survey. We really hope that you will want to have your say in making a difference to how your academy or college runs.

This survey is anonymous and we will not try to identify you. You can be very open and honest, though rude comments about people will be ignored.

Parents – please can you encourage your child to complete this independently? There’s a closing date of Monday 13th March.

From Monday – Scholastic Book Fair:

Come along after school next week to have a look at the wonderful Scholastic Book Fair. This will be at the back of the hall from 3:30 to 4:00. We are running a cashless system so please bring your mobile phones with you. This year, we will not be accepting cash payments. You will be able to pay by scanning a QR code to pay with your phone on Apple Pay or equivalent. You can also purchase Scholastic gift vouchers, which are available at https://bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/gift-vouchers

Once purchased, you will receive the voucher in an email which can be printed and brought to the fair.

For parents who use Wraparound care, you can make use of the gift vouchers available at https://bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/gift-vouchers and send the printed email to school with your child.  Please alert the Wraparound Team that your child has a voucher in their bag.
