Welcome from Co-op Academy New Islington

Dear Parents/Carers,

There are too many congratulations this week for me to include in one message! It's been one of the busiest weeks I can remember at New Islington. We have seen a truly wonderful Nativity performance from our talented Ladybirds and Bumblebees. Our year 6 children have impressed many visitors to the academy as part of their World of Work Week and provided me with lots of great feedback on our school, and our year 5's not only took part in but won the Co-op Sportshall Athletics tournament! Not to mention the Christmas Fair taking place today, which we are sure will be another fantastic event for our community.

Next week is our last before a well-earned Winter Break. We would like to thank each and every one of our staff, pupils and parents who have helped make New Islington such a special place.

As always, thank you for your continued support,

Mr Berry

What a Busy Week!

On Wednesday, a group of Year 5 students competed against other Co-op academies in an athletics competition. The children aimed high, showing fantastic teamwork skills. They won the competition by a resounding 50 points! Here is a photo of the children with their gold medals.

Co-op volunteers came to join the Early Years team for some crafty morning fun on Wednesday. The children had a wonderful time, decorating festive tree ornaments from wood.

Thank you to the volunteers for their time and festive cheer!

On Tuesday afternoon, expert gardeners Gary and Rachel from PLANT Co-operative Manchester brought in cornice and rosemary cuttings for the children to create beautifully scented festive ornaments. The children had an amazing sensory experience and our classrooms were refreshed with a wonderful scent of rosemary.

As part of our DT topic, Year 3 have been investigating pneumatics.

The children had to use a syringe to see how far they could make an inflated balloon travel. They then compared this to the second balloon, which was not tied, to see if the air pressure made a difference to the distance the balloon travelled.

The children conducted the investigation in the hall and measured their results. They found that the untied balloon travelled the furthest as it had a higher amount of air pressure inside which was released quickly.

A great afternoon combining Science and DT

Mrs Mazur's Year 2 class have had a little visitor this month who is getting up to all sorts of mischief! The Elf even changed the name of the class to 2EE (elf elf)

The children love seeing what he has been getting up to when everyone has gone home for the night.

Year 6 have had a busy week completing a range of activities for World of Work week. We have been discussing different careers, qualifications and transferable skills.

On Monday, we had three visitors who came into school. We had to ask them a range of questions to try to figure out their job.

On Tuesday, we had visitors from Circana as we participated in a Dragons Den session. The children worked in groups to design a product and deliver a pitch. Well done to the winning group from 6LB who will be representing the school at Angel Square!

On Wednesday, we visited Connell College. We spoke with students and staff about what subjects you can study at college. We also had a tour of the college.

On Thursday, the children completed 'interviews' for a 'job role' in school. We also had visitors from Barclays Bank. The volunteers commented on how fantastic our children were during these sessions.

Well done to Year 6 for their hard work throughout this week and for fantastically representing New Islington!

Year 4s have been working hard for the past few weeks on their Carnival Samba dance. This week we used props to add a bit of colour to our performances! Ask your child to teach you the samba step or a shoulder shimmy!
