Welcome from Co-op Academy New Islington

Dear Parents and Carers,

Last week we hosted an epic Summer Fair and the last few weeks have also been packed with our children showing off their many talents. I've seen Year 6 children representing the school stunningly in the Co-op Sweeney Todd production, our Chinese Music club show off their musical and linguistic skills with a presentation run by staff at Chetham's School of Music, and also heard our wonderful Rock Steady Bands raise the roof to cap off their time learning instruments. We also saw our children demonstrate their athletic prowess over two successful sports days.

I would like to take this chance to reflect on what has been an incredible and busy year of improvement at Co-op Academy New Islington both in terms of developing our academic outcomes, in which we have made great strides, but also our community. I am eternally grateful for the hard work and community spirit shown by all pupils, staff and parents at our wonderful academy

We wish you all a fantastic summer and look forward to welcoming you back in September! All the term dates are available on our website.

Kind Regards,

Mr Berry

Goodbye and Hello

We are sad to say that we are losing some of our wonderful team at the end of term.

Teachers Miss Carter, Mrs Harris, Mr Robertson (SEND teaching assistant) Miss Nixon (administrator) and Mr Kerrigan (site manager) are all moving on to pastures new.

We would like to sincerely thank them all for their hard work, care and support. They will all be missed.

But we are delighted to confirm some new additions.

Mr Fidgeon who has been covering in all classes is now joining us as a permanent Year 4 teacher. Mrs Khan is staying with us and will continue to teach in Year 2. Mrs Holt will be back from maternity leave and will be teaching Year 3 part time with Miss Peeks.

Highlights of the Year

Each class has put together a few of their highlights from what has been a very busy year. We have had amazing trips, sporting victories, inspiring visitors and lots of creativity throughout their work both in and out of the classroom.

Bumblebees and Ladybirds

Reception's favourite topics this year have been Frozen Planet and Superheroes!

We really enjoyed having an igloo in our class and a visit from Max the penguin. We did some lovely writing based on the book Lost and Found and we were great at retelling the story with actions!

The Superheroes topic was very exciting because we went to the doctors, the police museum and had a visit from a dentist - it was funny seeing our teeth turn purple when we checked our brushing skills!

One of our greatest memories was when we made an erupting volcano. Another favourite memory is having the caterpillars and watching them grow into butterflies - setting them free in Forest School was brilliant!

Year 1

It has been a fantastic year in Year 1MO. The children have made excellent progress in phonics, really refining their skills and gaining confidence in reading and writing. They loved their science lessons, especially when exploring plants and bulbs. Forest School has been another firm favourite - a wonderful opportunity for the children to experience the world around them in hands-on, exciting ways.
Most of all, it has been a joy to see friendships blossom and to watch the children grow as they gain new knowledge and skills each day.

Well done, Year 1 MO -  we are so proud of you!

Wishing you all the very best for Year 2!

Mrs Mazur and Mrs Hitchen

In 1NE, the children have chosen their highlights-

  • I've enjoyed writing stories
  • I enjoyed making new friends and playing with them
  • I loved learning to play the bass guitar in Rock Steady and I enjoyed performing in front of my family and friends.
  • I liked the Lion King performance from Year 6
  • I liked doing the obstacle race and having popcorn at the Summer Fair
  • I enjoyed throwing water at Mr Berry at the Summer Fair- it was fun!
  • I enjoyed the Easter Bonnet parade and decorating my Easter hat.
  • The Big Lunch was one of my favourite things in Year 1.
  • We don't think we could have done any of these things without Miss O'Mahony

Year 2

Mrs Khan-

This year, our Year 2 children have thoroughly enjoyed making healthy wraps. In DT, they had the opportunity to use a safety knife to cut some fruits or vegetables to make their wraps. Then they had to assemble the wrap by following a step by step guide on how to fold their delicious, tasty wrap. They also visited the Sadler's Yard, where they planted seeds and watered them. Finally, a walk to St Anne's church, where children explored various religious items and the purpose of them.

Miss Wakeling-

This year, our Year 2 children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring nature through a variety of hands-on experiences. In Forest School, they had the opportunity to learn about fire safety while toasting marshmallows around a campfire. They also visited Sadler’s Yard, where they planted seeds and observed their growth over time. A walk around the local community allowed them to discover and compare human and physical features of the environment. Back in the classroom, their creativity shone in DT as they linked their learning to nature by designing and building farms/ zoos using a range of materials.

Year 3

Miss Carter-

3FC have had a wonderful year with lots of fantastic moments. We loved our trip to a local mosque where the Imam showed us around and told us about the fascinating history of Islam.

We also got the opportunity to visit a brand new charging station for electric vehicles when Srinika won a design competition. The children were able to see how charging stations work and plant some seeds.

More recently, we also went on a walk around our local area in Ancoats to look at how buildings from the Industrial Revolution are used now and bring our history topic to life.

Some other highlights include when we made apple and berry crumbles and sewed book covers in DT, our whole class forest school sessions and our Matisse-inspired collages in art.

Mr Nightingale-

3NP have had a fantastic year with learning opportunities in and outside the classroom! In Science the children loved identifying the parts of a flower.  The 'plants' topic positively encouraged curious learning for all and it was wonderful to see children confidently explaining the function of parts of a flower to their partner.

In Art, the children enjoyed focusing on their Skills Builder skill 'creativity.'  The class were inspired by the mixed media works of Henri Matisse to create their own collages.  Individual creativity was celebrated in 3NP with a class show and tell.

A key highlight was our trip to the Manchester Mosque.  "I loved exploring the mosque, it was huge and fun!"  The Imam from the mosque gave us a guided tour and linked it to our prior knowledge of the five pillars of Islam studied during our R.E. lessons.

More recently, we also went on a walk around our local area in Ancoats to look at how buildings from the Industrial Revolution are used now and bring our history topic to life.  We also made an apple and berry fruit crumble in DT ready for the children to take home!

Year 4

Mr Jackson-

My favourite moment of this year was seeing all of our Year 4 children perform at a 90s music concert at Manchester Grammar School. The children practiced really well and the performance was fantastic. They performed wonderfully on the day, and sang songs including Angels, Living La Loca and Freedom. The children should be incredibly proud.

I have also really enjoyed witnessing the children progress in their swimming lessons! All the children have finished the year confident and competent swimmers and hope they take their love of swimming further.

Miss Ballentine-

We have had a fantastic year with trips, activities and workshops. We completed our concert at Manchester Grammar School singing songs from the 90s. We travelled to Wythenshawe to participate in the Irish Music Festival by learning to play Irish instruments and sing songs. We also visited Old Mill Theatre to learn all about careers and roles in this setting.

As well as learning new things during our lessons, we have also been very creative. We have made food sculptures out of clay, made bread during our DT topic and made our own chocolate. During our forest school sessions, we have helped to grow and sell vegetables to be sold to our school community.

The children have made excellent progress during our weekly swimming lessons, with all children learning how to swim and to be safe around water.

We have had a fantastic year learning and growing together. I am so proud of every single child in the class. Well done 4EB!

Year 5

Mrs Harris-

Our highlights have included

  • Having a careers talk from civil engineers where we had a go at building our own pasta bridges and experienced a construction site using a VR kit.
  • We grew and sold our vegetables on Market Street and met the Mayor
  • We had an exclusive behind the scenes tour of Hope Mill Theatre
  • We had a visit from a real Viking where we leaned all about his life as a warrior
  • We also visited National Trust Lyme Park to learn about forestry and habitats.
  • And of course, a group of our children visited the Houses of Parliament in London.

Year 6

Miss Bowers and Miss Dempsey-

The Year 6 residential was a lot of fun - the children all got involved with the activities and we were really impressed us all with their can-do attitude. We will forever remember watching them all zip wiring, rock climbing and abseiling! I was impressed with what they could all do.

I remember going to the Etihad stadium on the tram with Year 6 to take part in their winter wonderland day. The children had a truly amazing time and did not know where to begin! An amazing trip and some beautiful memories

Mrs Williams

I would like to say thank you to all the staff, children and parents who have welcomed me into the New Islington family this year. It has been an amazing year and we have achieved so much. We have had trips to London, the Peak District and around Manchester as well as amazing performances from Rock Steady and the Lion King and special events such as World Book Day and Sports day. It has been a pleasure to go into every classroom and see the wonderful learning that has been taking place across school. I am very excited about what the future holds and I am delighted to be part of the New Islington community permanently.

Have a very lovely summer and I look forward to seeing you all in September.

Mrs Williams

School garden success for humans and pollinators

Over the last few months, children from all year groups have been planting tomatoes and sunflowers in pots to help make our school a healthier, brighter and more colourful place.

With the help of KS2 gardeners, they are now thriving and growing huge with lush colours in many places: on our rooftop garden, balcony, in the car park garden and in Forest School. Our tomatoes are plentiful and just ripening - what perfect timing!

Year 1 children have already had a taste of their very own home-grown organic tomatoes today - ready, red and ripe. There will be plenty more due to ripen over the last few days of term and if the weatherman plays along, all classes will get their turn to harvest and taste their own lush produce.

This is another great book for children starting to get into chapter books and the first in a series which follows the antics of Anisha.

Things go from bad to worse when Anisha gets a note saying Bindi’s groom, Uncle Tony, has been kidnapped, and won’t be released until the wedding is cancelled! With the help of her best friend Milo, mischievous Granny Jas and a runaway lobster and a kitten-loving giant, it's up to Anisha to find her uncle. But she has a hunch the culprit is somebody close to the family.
